 What is Extraction?

Extraction is the removal of the tooth either decayed or healthy teeth for orthodontic or Cosmetic purpose.

What care should I take before undergoing any Extraction?

a) Start medication 24 hrs before the appointment.

b) STOP ECOSPRIN / ASPIRIN TABLETS 24 hrs before the surgery & rest all your other tablets continue, as per your daily routine.

c) On the day of surgery, have some light food before coming. NO EMPTY STOMACH, NO FASTING.

d) ½ hr before the appointment, you should have one tablet of each medicine prescribed and come 15 minutes before the appointment time schedule.

What care should I take after any Extraction

1) After Removal of tooth, keep the cotton pack for 1 hour, till then do not spit out. Gulp all the saliva and medicines. Spitting will open the socket & will take 8-10 days to heal. SO DO NOT SPIT.

2) Apply ice on the cheek from outside at least for one hour immediately after extraction. Maximum ice application will insure minimum swelling.

3) After one hour throw the cotton pack out and DO NOT rinse or gargle and DO NOT keep any other cotton as it may cause infection and will take 15 days to heal.

4) Immediately after removal of cotton pack, have some cold milk or plain ice-cream (without any fruits and nuts) from the same extraction side.

5) After this do not eat from that side for the next three days.

6) On the day of extraction eat only soft and cold food from the opposite side.

7) No hot coffee, tea, smoking or tobacco. This may lead to swelling & will take 15 days to subside.

8) Pain today & tomorrow is common, if pain occurs day after tomorrow come for the dressing.

9) Continue the medication for 3-4 days.

10) Slight pain, swelling & bleeding is common. Nothing to worry about.

11) Do not sleep with your head titled from the side of extraction. It may cause Swelling.

What are the benefits of replacing missing teeth?

a).Better Esthetics (looks) and Young Age Feeling.

b).Better support to adjacent & opposite teeth preventing them from bending towards empty space and loosing its integrity & firmness in the jawbone as well as maintaining the charm of your cheeks and facial skin.

c).Proper chewing of food to have good digestion & good health. If food is not minced to small particles by the teeth, the stomach has to do that job & finally the stomach cannot do its own job of mechanising food into blood, as a result, improper digestion and general Health Problems occurs.

d).If you have your complete set of teeth, your mastication (chewing) force is distributed to all the 32 teeth and thus preventing the overload on the existing remaining teeth and causing their loosening and damage.

What if you replace my missing teeth later in life, as now I am comfortable chewing?

Today you may have the option of getting fixed teeth replacement, Tomorrow later in life you may not get this option left for you if your last supporting tooth becomes weak or if it is extracted.& then you may have to unwillingly go for a removable denture for Better looks & for Better chewing. Secondly, if you decide later in future to replace your missing teeth, you may have already lost the firmness of your cheeks, lips, skin which may make you look older than what your age is.
