Above are the steps of root canal treatment.

What is a Root Canal Treatment? Which tooth goes for a Root Canal Treatment?

Root Canal Treatment is a safe and technique sensitive treatment option for a tooth which has been decayed upto the 3rd (nerve) layer or a fractured, broken tooth or a tooth which has developed pus and swelling at its base. This treatment is an alternative to EXTRACTION which was done in the olden days but now we retain the tooth in the mouth for a longer period of time.

What is the procedure for Root Canal Treatment?

Root Canal Treatment is a safe and technique sensitive treatment option in which the tooth is first anaesthetised by a small injection and then slight drilling is done on the tooth to reach the 3rd(nerve) layer; the decayed pulp tissue is removed from the 3rd layer.
The empty spaces (Canals) are cleaned with medicines & liquid solutions till we achieve a clean dry canal.
Then the tooth is filled up by a filling material known as G.P points & the tooth is sealed from top so that no new infection enters the inner part of the tooth to cause new cavities or infection.

It can be done in 1 single sitting or 3 to 5 sittings depending on the tooth, the grade of infection & swelling.

Root Canal Treated tooth should always be covered with a cap on it.

Why to cover that Root Canal Treated tooth with a cap?

It is necessary to cover the Root Canal Treated tooth with a cap as after the pulp tissue is removed from the centre part of the tooth, the tooth structure becomes weak, unable to bear heavy chewing forces and the tooth may break any time & secondly after few months, the tooth may also start becoming darker in colour. So to avoid all this, and to enjoy long lasting good healthy teeth, cover the tooth by a cap.

Are there any chances of pain or swelling after Root Canal Treatment?

Sometimes it does happen that after Root Canal Treatment, the Patient might develop some immediate or delayed pain or swelling. It may be due to many reasons:
Normal body-response to Root Canal Treatment procedure.
Allergy to injection solution, medicaments used or to the root canal filling material.
Some left over infection or some nerve fibers remaining inside the canal.
Some new infection developing at the base of the tooth thru the gums.

DO NOT PANIC, all this can be subsided by medicines or by re-doing the Root Canal Treatment.

What are the different types of caps(crowns)?

There are different types of caps(crowns) available:
Acrylic Caps.
Golden Caps.
Silver Metal(Cobalt Chrome) Caps.
Nickel Titanium Base with 1/2 Ceramic(Porcelain) Caps.
Nickel Titanium Base Coated with Full Cerami(Porcelain) Caps.
Precious metal (Titanium + Silver) with Full Ceramic(Porcelain) Caps.
Precious Gold Coated with Full Ceramic(Porcelain) Caps.
Full Ceramic(Porcelain) Caps.

What if I do not go for Root Canal Treatment & subside my pain & Swelling by medicine?

By taking medicines, your pain & swelling will subside for the time being. But later the decay & infection from the tooth may spread deeper & to adjacent tooth taking it to Root Canal stage or the tooth may break from inside and you may have to extract that tooth & then replacing that extracted tooth may cause you more time, energy and money as compared to 1 single tooth Root Canal with a single cap.
